Iran's UN Mission: Haley's Statements are Disgusting

Following the U.S. request for an emergency Security Council meeting regarding developments in Iran, the Islamic Republic's mission to the United Nations described the statements of the U.S. permanent representative at the UN as "disgusting." In a statement, Iran's UN mission referred to what it called a "show" by Nikki Haley, the U.S. ambassador and permanent representative to the UN, as "disgusting crocodile tears." The statement condemned Haley's remarks and those of other U.S. officials regarding the recent street protests in Iran as "support for violence and chaos" and "interventionist," and it was "strongly condemned." The statement noted that "these words are meant to cover up the failed policies of the U.S. and its allies in the region and seek revenge against the brave and honorable people of Iran." The Islamic Republic's mission to the UN referred to U.S. interventions in the events of the 1953 coup in Iran as a "bloody and disgraceful record" and added that "the threats and nonsense of the U.S. representative at the UN are considered support for violence and arson in Iran." The statement also claimed that "the people of Iran will protect the rights and achievements of the Islamic Revolution despite the recent propaganda." This reaction from the Islamic Republic's mission to the UN comes after Nikki Haley called for an emergency Security Council meeting on January 1 regarding developments in Iran. She read posts from several Iranian users on social media about the protesters, stating that Iran's claim that the protests were designed by foreign powers is "ridiculous." Haley praised what she called the "extraordinary courage" of the Iranian people, stating that "the U.S. wants to amplify the voice of the Iranian people" and "we are calling for an emergency meeting." U.S. President Donald Trump also praised the Iranian protesters for standing up against what he called the "ruthless and corrupt" Islamic Republic. Trump tweeted: "The people of Iran have finally acted against the ruthless and corrupt Iranian regime. All the money that Barack Obama gave them was spent on terrorism and filling their 'pockets.'" At the same time, the U.S. State Department urged Iran to lift the ban on Instagram and other social media platforms. Steve Goldstein, the U.S. Under Secretary of State, stated that the United States wants to "encourage the protesters to continue fighting for what is right." U.S. officials have repeatedly emphasized Washington's support for the protesters in Iran in recent days. For instance, Vice President Mike Pence stated that Washington would not repeat the "shameful mistake" of the past regarding Iranian protesters, referring to the protests of 2009 in Iran, where Republicans claim the U.S. government did not support the protesting people. Demonstrations and street protests have so far taken place in at least 50 cities in Iran, with protesters chanting slogans against the entire Islamic Republic system. The crackdown on these protests has left 21 dead as of Tuesday, and more than a thousand have been arrested.
