IRGC Denies Spokesman's Statements Regarding Nuclear Visits

The news agency of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has denied statements attributed to its spokesperson regarding nuclear negotiations and issues related to visits to nuclear and military sites. This denial was posted on the organization's website late on July 9. In a brief explanation, it referred to news reports citing Ramadan Sharif, the head of the IRGC's public relations, about visits to military and nuclear sites, stating that 'the remarks attributed to General Sharif regarding nuclear negotiations and visits to nuclear and military centers have been denied, and he did not make any comments on this matter during his press conference regarding the explanation of the International Quds Day programs.' On the same day, Iranian media quoted Mr. Sharif as saying that the IRGC would 'under no circumstances' allow International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors to inspect 'military sites.' He emphasized that Iranian officials would also not grant such permission. This statement comes at a time when Iranian and IAEA officials have recently spoken about progress in their cooperation and reaching an understanding to resolve remaining disputes. One of the most important issues raised in nuclear negotiations between Iran and world powers, which the IAEA has been seeking answers to for years, is the 'possible military dimensions' of Tehran's nuclear program in the past. In recent meetings between international agency officials and Iranian officials, this topic has been addressed with optimism. The spokesperson for the Iranian Atomic Energy Organization stated on July 6 that during the recent visit of the IAEA delegation to Tehran, 'a significant step was taken towards resolving outstanding issues by achieving a fundamental understanding regarding the agenda and timeline of joint cooperation.' Yukiya Amano, the Director General of the IAEA, also mentioned on July 3 the possibility of the agency's report on the potential military dimensions of Tehran's nuclear program being ready by the end of the current year.
