Is Israel's Iron Dome Air Defense System Infallible?

Since Israel activated the Iron Dome in 2011, this advanced missile defense system has intercepted thousands of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. According to the Associated Press, this air defense system has provided a sense of security to Israeli residents, who are often seen watching projectiles flying in the sky and being destroyed above them. However, the current war with the militant group Hamas, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the U.S., Japan, and the European Union, may pose the toughest challenge for Israel to date. According to Israeli military forces, Hamas has fired 7,000 rockets towards Israel in just two weeks. This number exceeds that of any of the four previous wars between Israel and Hamas since this militant group came to power in Gaza in 2007. Data from West Point indicates that on October 7, the first day of the war, which was marked by terrorist attacks across various parts of Israel, Hamas launched at least 2,000 rockets towards Israel. The Lebanese militant group Hezbollah has also fired hundreds of rockets towards northern Israel since the onset of the conflict. Most rockets were intercepted and destroyed. However, according to Israeli officials, some that managed to reach the vicinity of Tel Aviv struck buildings, killing at least 11 people. How does the Iron Dome work? The Iron Dome consists of a series of batteries that use radar to identify and track short-range missiles entering the area. According to Raytheon, the largest U.S. military equipment manufacturer that produces the system in collaboration with Israel's Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, each battery has three or four launchers, 20 interceptors, and one radar. When the radar identifies a missile, the system determines whether the missile is heading towards a populated area. If it detects that the missile is targeting a residential and densely populated area, it aims to intercept and destroy it. However, if the missile is heading towards an open area or the sea, it allows it to land to conserve its resources. According to Israeli military forces, all interceptions occur within Israeli airspace. The accuracy of the Iron Dome is reported to be about 90%. However, if faced with a barrage of missiles, it can lose control and allow some to pass through. Although the Iron Dome has performed well so far, the risk of error could increase if Hezbollah enters the conflict, as Hezbollah possesses approximately 150,000 missiles and projectiles.
