ISIS Executed Nearly 2,000 People in Syria Over Six Months

According to a recent report from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Islamic State group has executed 1,878 people in the past six months, among whom 120 were members of the group itself. This organization, based in London, stated on January 7 that most of those executed by ISIS were civilians. Reuters quotes this group as saying that 930 of these civilians were former members of the Sunni Shaitat tribe in eastern Syria, a tribe that was fighting against ISIS. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a total of 1,175 civilians have been executed by ISIS. Meanwhile, of the 120 executed members of this Islamist group, except for four, the rest were individuals attempting to leave the battles and return to their homes. Earlier, at the end of December, the Financial Times reported that ISIS executed 100 of its foreign members who intended to flee their positions in the city of Raqqa, Syria. The number reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights refers to 116 executed members in Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and Hasakah (northeast Syria). Rami Abdulrahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, who has collected this data from various sources, told Reuters that 502 of the executed were pro-government Syrian military personnel and 81 were opponents of Bashar al-Assad. The Islamic State group, which controls parts of Syria and Iraq, is fighting both Bashar al-Assad's forces and its opponents. On the other hand, it is also the target of airstrikes by a U.S.-led coalition as well as Iraqi government forces and Kurdish Peshmerga in Iraq. The Syrian civil war has left more than 200,000 casualties.
