Islamic Republic's Propaganda Use of the Release of Hamas Hostages

The English section of Voice of America reported that investigations show the Islamic Republic of Iran is using the release of Kate Siegel, an American-Israeli citizen, and other hostages held by Hamas to advance its propaganda goals. The report states that the Iranian government is attempting to present a misleading narrative about Hamas, claiming that this Palestinian terrorist group has treated Israeli hostages fairly, while accusing Israel of treating Palestinian prisoners 'brutally.' Kate Siegel is one of three hostages who were freed by the Iran-supported Hamas after more than 480 days in captivity early last week. Hamas militants abducted her from her home in one of the kibbutzim near the Gaza Strip during their terrorist attack on October 7. Following a ceasefire agreement with Israel, Hamas also released Yarden Bibas and Ofer Calderon in exchange for the freedom of 183 Palestinian prisoners. Reports from Iranian state media focused on a narrative claiming that Palestinian prisoners were tortured and mistreated by Israel. These media outlets also claimed that Siegel and other hostages previously released by Hamas expressed gratitude for the humane treatment they received from this Palestinian group. The Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) published a statement attributed to Siegel, stating that she thanked Hamas for providing food and medical needs for the hostages. IRNA also claimed that Siegel criticized the Israeli government for not making enough efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement in Gaza and to secure the return of the hostages. However, Siegel's family issued a statement in the 'Times of Israel' on the same day, claiming that she was forced to write a letter of thanks to Hamas before her release. The family stated, 'While in captivity, Hamas terrorists coerced Kate into writing a detailed letter of thanks. This is just one example of Hamas's cruel and evil behavior and underscores the necessity of bringing all remaining hostages back to Israel.' While Iranian state media focused on claims that Hamas provided adequate medical care for Siegel, they did not mention her broken ribs and gunshot wound to her hand. Kate Siegel was one of 249 hostages taken during Hamas's terrorist attack on Israel on October 7. Her husband, who was also kidnapped by Hamas and released in November of the same year, stated that hostages had to beg Hamas militants for food and water. The report also references other instances of Iranian state media, including 'Press TV,' using the release of Israeli hostages to promote Tehran's propaganda goals. These reports portray Hamas's treatment of hostages as 'fair and humane' while providing misleading narratives about Israel's violent treatment of Palestinian prisoners. Meanwhile, Israeli hostages have reported various instances of torture, mistreatment, and even sexual abuse by Hamas militants after their release.
