Israel: Al Jazeera Palestinian Journalist is a 'Member of Hamas Anti-Tank Missile Unit'

The Israeli army claims that images and documents obtained indicate that Mohammad Samir Wahash, a Palestinian journalist for Al Jazeera, is likely a commander in Hamas's military wing. The Times of Israel reported, citing Avichai Adraee, the Arabic-speaking spokesperson for the Israeli army, that Israeli soldiers found a laptop belonging to this individual at a Hamas base in northern Gaza weeks ago. According to this army spokesperson, Mohammad Samir Wahash is a 'prominent commander' and a 'member of Hamas's anti-tank missile unit,' and 'began activities in [the field of] research and development for this terrorist group's air defense unit in late 2022.' The Persian-language account of the Israeli Foreign Ministry on X media also published images related to Mohammad Samir Wahash's journalistic and military activities. Last month, two Al Jazeera journalists were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Rafah, after which the Israeli army accused them of being members of Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Meanwhile, the Israeli army recently reported the discovery of Hamas tunnels beneath the main headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Gaza. Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of using civilian infrastructure such as schools, mosques, and UN facilities to attack the country. The Palestinian group Hamas, which is supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, has also been accused of using Palestinian civilians as 'human shields.' Following the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas, which resulted in 1,200 deaths and over 240 hostages, Israel launched an offensive in Gaza aimed at destroying this Iran-backed Islamist group. Hamas, without mentioning its own casualties in Israeli attacks, claims that over 28,000 Palestinians residing in Gaza have been killed in these attacks. The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, Israel, and several other countries have listed Hamas as a terrorist organization. Biden and Netanyahu discussed a 'common goal' of defeating Hamas and ensuring the safety of refugees in Rafah. Netanyahu stated that there are still a 'sufficient' number of hostages alive to justify the war in Gaza. Claims by a UN reporter regarding 'October 7 victims' provoked Israel's anger. Netanyahu remarked that those who tell us not to enter Rafah are saying do not win against Hamas. Israeli airstrikes in Rafah resulted in over 30 deaths. Hezbollah's rocket fire towards Israel coincided with the arrival of the Iranian Foreign Minister in Lebanon.
