Israel Arrests an Iranian on Charges of Espionage for the Islamic Republic

On Friday, Israel's internal security agency, Shin Bet, arrested a Jewish Iranian citizen accused of espionage for the Islamic Republic at an airport in Israel, preventing his entry into the country. According to the Jerusalem Post, the suspect, who has relatives in Israel, was detained after disembarking from a plane and confessed that the purpose of his trip was to gather information and take photographs for Iranian security officials. The Jerusalem Post, without naming the suspect, added that he had met with Iranian security officials before entering Israel and received a box of tissues from them, which was intended to conceal camera equipment, a mobile phone, a phone charger, and money. Iranian officials had instructed him to monitor addresses he received through his Iranian operator. After completing the investigation, this Jewish Iranian was not allowed entry into Israel and was returned to Iran by plane. Shin Bet described this incident as "part of Iran's extensive efforts to establish espionage and assassination networks in Israel" and emphasized that it will continue to identify and neutralize Iran's "terrorist, espionage, and cyber activities" in collaboration with its intelligence partners. According to the Jerusalem Post, last week, Shin Bet also thwarted an operation by the Islamic Republic aimed at gathering information about Israeli policies and citizens. The arrest and prevention of this Jewish Iranian suspect from entering Israel come at a time when a Jerusalem court had recently acquitted two women and one man of Iranian descent from charges of espionage for Iran. These individuals were part of a five-member group of Iranian-Israelis who were arrested in January of the previous year by Shin Bet and Israeli police for allegedly having connections with an Iranian individual named Rambod Namdar to collect information for the Islamic Republic. Five Iranian-Israeli citizens were acquitted of espionage charges for the Islamic Republic.
