Israel at War; Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair: We Will Pass Legislation to Support Israel

Ben Cardin, Chair of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, announced on Saturday, October 7, the introduction of a bill to legislate support for Israel. Senator Ben Cardin stated in a press release, referring to the U.S. President's emphasis on supporting Israel's right to defend itself against terrorism: "I intend to move forward with the legislative process at the earliest opportunity, focusing on providing what Israel needs for its self-defense." He added, "This legislation will focus on completing the Iron Dome missile defense system and considering additional financial assistance for Israel's defense so that Israel can quickly overcome the consequences of this terrorist attack." The Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee also mentioned that he intends to lead a resolution to strengthen the U.S. commitment to relations with Israel, stating: "I eagerly look forward to collaborating with my colleagues, both Republicans and Democrats, to swiftly advance such steps to demonstrate the longstanding bipartisan support for the U.S.-Israel partnership." He also noted, "It is vital now, as always, that we have a Senate-confirmed ambassador in Israel. That is why I hope my colleagues will join me in the immediate confirmation of Jacob J. Lew as the new U.S. ambassador to Israel." Following the terrorist attacks by Hamas on Israeli territory, which left hundreds dead and injured, many U.S. officials expressed support for Israel. President Joe Biden reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Israel on Saturday evening, stating: "America stands with the people of Israel. We will never turn our backs on them."
