Israel Attacked IRGC Missile Site During Assad's Rule

Israeli Kan network reported on Sunday that Israeli commandos attacked an underground missile production facility of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the city of Masyaf, Syria, in September 2024. According to the report, the attack targeted the Scientific Studies and Research Center of the Syrian government's defense industries as well as the missile production facilities managed by the IRGC. The Kan network added that the Israeli government had informed the United States in advance about the attack. According to Israeli defense officials, the country had been monitoring the Scientific Studies and Research Center of the Syrian government for over a decade. Israel prepared its operational plans after becoming aware of the transfer of components for a guided missile production project from the Iranian government to these facilities and decided to address this 'growing threat.' The decision to operationalize this attack was influenced by concerns regarding the ongoing war between Israel and Iranian proxies and the potential dangers arising from the mass production of missiles at these facilities. The Kan report further stated that Hezbollah was supposed to benefit from the mentioned weapons. The Israeli government ultimately deemed the operation 'urgent' to prevent these facilities from reaching full production capacity, and Israeli commandos carried out the operation 200 kilometers from Israeli territory. In recent years, Israel has been known for repeatedly attacking IRGC positions and Iranian-affiliated militias in Syria, especially Hezbollah, but has rarely claimed responsibility for these attacks. Following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack, the intensity and frequency of attacks on the positions of the Islamic Republic and its proxies in Syria increased.
