Israel: Hamas Creates 'New Obstacles' to Hostage Freedom

The Israeli government rejected claims by the Palestinian militant group Hamas that Israel is attempting to delay the release of hostages and a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip, accusing Hamas of creating 'new obstacles' to reaching an agreement. In a statement released by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, January 5, it stated: 'The terrorist organization Hamas is lying again, deviating from agreements that have been reached so far, and continues to create new obstacles in the path of negotiations.' During the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, Hamas killed over 1,200 residents, mostly civilians, and took more than 250 others, including women, children, and the elderly, hostage. In response to this attack, Israel launched an assault on Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas and retrieving the kidnapped hostages. Reports indicate that the Gaza war, which began with Hamas's terrorist attack on Israeli citizens, has so far resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of residents in the area. While about 100 hostages were exchanged for Palestinian prisoners during a temporary ceasefire in late autumn last year, around 100 remain in Hamas captivity, and reports suggest that some of them have been killed. The Hamas group is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Israel, Canada, Japan, and several other countries. The Israeli Defense Minister stated that a fate similar to that of Hamas and Hezbollah awaits the Houthis.
