Israel: Iran Uses Passenger Planes to Transfer Weapons to Hezbollah

Danny Danon, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in a letter to the UN Security Council on Tuesday of using passenger planes to transfer weapons to Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to Reuters, the Israeli ambassador stated that the IRGC uses Mahan Air to transport weapons. Danon wrote that the Quds Force of the IRGC embeds weapons and equipment in suitcases and transfers them via passenger planes to Beirut or Damascus. The Israeli ambassador added that it is very clear that Iran is the main supplier of weapons and equipment to Hezbollah, which violates UN Security Council resolutions. Reuters reports that Danon did not provide evidence or documentation for such accusations in his letter to the 15 members of the Security Council. This letter comes as the U.S. Treasury Department issued a second license for the sale of 118 Airbus planes to Iran. Reuters notes that this letter could fuel discussions regarding Iran's arms sanctions and the issue of the nuclear agreement with Tehran, known as the JCPOA. The U.S. has listed Hezbollah as a terrorist organization since 1995.
