Israel Signs $535 Million Contract for a 'Powerful' Laser Interception System

The Director General of the Israeli Ministry of Defense has stated that Israel's powerful laser interception system, known as "Iron Beam," is expected to become operational within a year. According to the Times of Israel, Eyal Zamir made this announcement during the signing of a 2 billion shekel ($535 million) contract with Israeli defense equipment manufacturers Rafael and Elbit, stating: "The first capability of this ground-based laser system is expected to enter operational service within a year." Iron Beam is designed to operate alongside systems like the Iron Dome to intercept smaller projectiles. Rafael describes Iron Beam on its website as a "100-kilowatt class high-energy laser weapon system," which is expected to be the first of its kind. According to the company, this system is effective in targeting threats at distances ranging from several hundred meters to several kilometers. The Times of Israel reports that unlike the Iron Dome system, which costs tens of thousands of dollars per interception, Iron Beam costs about two dollars per use, as noted by former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett during a visit to Rafael's factory in 2022. Yoav Turgeman, CEO of Rafael, recently told Israeli media, "Iron Beam is just one of the advancements that is progressing rapidly and has global technological achievements." Managers from Israeli companies Rafael and Elbit have provided information about the ground-to-air version of the Iron Beam system. They also mentioned that an air-to-ground version of this system is under development, but its completion is expected to take years. A previous report from the New York Times revealed that in secret documents from the extremist group Hamas regarding the internal planning of its leaders for an attack on Israel, it was noted that after Naftali Bennett's speech in the fall of 2022 about the imminent operationalization of the Iron Beam system, Yahya Sinwar realized that the attack on Israel needed to be executed sooner and asked Iran and Hezbollah to join Hamas's campaign against Israel that spring, but Iran rejected that request. The secret Hamas documents indicated that Yahya Sinwar considered the potential use of Israel's new laser system to undermine Hamas's plans to launch rockets at Israel. During the ongoing war with Hezbollah, which has seen drone attacks from this Iranian proxy group, Israel has encouraged its military industries and private technology companies to present countermeasures against these drones. Israeli media reported last week that multiple initiatives in this area have been presented, some of which have been effectively tested. With U.S. support, Israel has an advanced multi-layered defense system that includes the "THAAD," "Arrow 3," "Arrow 2," "David's Sling," and "Iron Dome" systems, designed to intercept and destroy various missiles and drones. The "THAAD" system was recently deployed in Israel with the presence of 100 American soldiers and has the capability to identify and track missiles at long distances. According to their statements, Iranian officials hoped that by increasing the number of their missiles and supported militia groups in the region, they could effectively bypass Israeli defense systems by launching these missiles simultaneously at a given time. However, in recent months, Israel has targeted numerous missiles and missile launchers in Gaza and southern Lebanon and has struck the missile infrastructure of the Islamic Republic in its air operations against Iranian territory. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Israel's attacks on Iran early Saturday appear to have been effective and that "the Iranian regime is more vulnerable than the world and the Biden administration think." According to the newspaper, Israel first disabled air defenses in Syria and Iraq early Saturday before attacking Iran's air defenses, conducting operations without challenge "including against Russian S-300 systems protecting Tehran, and systems protecting critical oil refineries, a large gas field, and a major port"; the newspaper noted that "Iran's oil economy is now defenseless." The Wall Street Journal quoted an Israeli official stating that Iran had four S-300 missile systems before this attack, the most advanced of which was with Tehran's air defense, but "all of them were destroyed." In response to Israel's attack on Iranian military centers on November 5, Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, stated that "underestimating" the impact of this attack is incorrect.
