Israeli Army Claims No Awareness of Military Activity in Area Where Palestinian Journalist Was Killed

The Israel Defense Forces announced that they have no awareness of any military activity in the area where a Palestinian television journalist and his family were killed on Thursday in southern Gaza. According to media outlets affiliated with Palestinian officials, 'Mohammad Abuhatab,' a journalist for a Palestinian television station, and 11 family members were killed Thursday night in southern Gaza. This television network claimed that these individuals were 'killed in an Israeli airstrike on his home.' According to the Palestinian-managed network, his death occurred shortly after he appeared live on air. The Israeli army stated in a statement to CNN on Saturday, 'Based on an examination of operations in the area, the Israeli army is not aware of any military activity conducted by our forces in the vicinity of the site in question.' In the recent war between Israel and Hamas militants, journalists have increasingly been harmed. According to a statement from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) on Thursday, 'This is the deadliest period for journalists since 1992, with the number of journalists killed in these conflicts rising to 36.' According to this organization, these casualties include 31 Palestinians, four Israelis, and one Lebanese. The report also noted that eight other journalists have been injured, and nine others are missing or detained. The day before, over 70 journalist associations and unions from dozens of countries issued a statement urging the Israeli government to take serious measures to protect the lives of journalists covering the Gaza war. According to the International Federation of Journalists, since the start of the war between Hamas and Israel, the number of media personnel killed has exceeded one per day in an unprecedented occurrence. In recent days, the Israeli army responded to requests from the French and Reuters news agencies to ensure the safety of their journalists in Gaza, stating that it 'targets Hamas positions throughout Gaza' and that Hamas 'deliberately' conducts its military operations 'in proximity to journalists and civilians.' The Israeli army, referring to intense attacks on Hamas positions and the potential for damage to buildings near these militant positions, as well as failed rocket launches by Hamas, told the two news agencies, 'Under such circumstances, we cannot guarantee the safety of your employees, and we urgently request that you take all necessary measures for their safety.'
