Israeli Army Confirms Death of Three Sons of Ismail Haniyeh in Gaza

Hamas and the family of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the militant group, announced that three of his sons were killed in an Israeli airstrike on Wednesday, April 22, in Gaza. In this context, the Israeli army identified the three as members of the 'terrorist' group Hamas. According to Reuters, Hamas stated that Hazem, Amir, and Mohammad, three sons of Ismail Haniyeh, were killed when a bomb struck their vehicle in Gaza. Hamas media reported that two of Haniyeh's grandchildren were also killed in the attack and another person was injured. Reuters wrote that Ismail Haniyeh, who lives in Qatar, told Al Jazeera that 'the blood of my sons is no more precious than the blood of the people.' Previously, during the approximately seven months of war between Hamas and Israel, videos had circulated on social media criticizing Ismail Haniyeh and other Hamas leaders who are outside Gaza. Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced that its air force targeted 'three Hamas military operatives conducting terrorist activities in central Gaza Strip' early on Wednesday. According to a report published on the Israeli army's Telegram channel, these three were 'Amir Haniyeh, a core commander in Hamas's military branch; and Mohammad and Hazem Haniyeh, military operatives in the terrorist organization Hamas,' the sons of Ismail Haniyeh. The extremist Islamist group Hamas killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in a 'savage' attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and took 253 others hostage. About 100 of these hostages were released during a two-week ceasefire last December, but Hamas continues to withhold the release of the remaining hostages. In the latest news regarding the hostages, CNN reported on Wednesday, citing an Israeli official and a source familiar with the Cairo negotiations, that Hamas has stated it is currently unable to identify and track 40 Israeli hostages needed to carry out the first phase of the ceasefire agreement. According to CNN, this has raised concerns that this number of Israeli hostages may have been killed. Israel claims its goal is the complete destruction of Hamas and will not cease fighting until this is achieved. The group Hamas, recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and several European countries, is supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
