Israeli Army Issues Evacuation Order for a 'Safe' Area in Gaza Strip

The Israeli army has issued an evacuation order for part of an area in the Gaza Strip that was previously designated as a 'safe area'; this region includes the eastern part of the humanitarian zone of Mawasi located in southern Gaza. According to the Associated Press, the Israeli army announced on Monday, July 23, that it intends to launch operations against the extremist group Hamas, which is based in this area and is firing rockets towards Israel from there. Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. Concurrently with these developments and news regarding Joe Biden's withdrawal from the U.S. presidential election race, the Israeli Prime Minister set off for the United States on Monday morning to meet with Mr. Biden. Benjamin Netanyahu stated ahead of this trip that Israel is America's most important ally in the Middle East, regardless of who the President of the United States is. He expressed gratitude to Joe Biden for over '40 years of friendship' with Israel and deemed his trip to the U.S. significant. A day earlier, the Israeli Prime Minister's office announced Mr. Netanyahu's agreement to send an Israeli negotiating team to the Gaza ceasefire talks on Thursday. Meanwhile, the Israeli army announced on Monday that it would continue its operations in central and southern Gaza. In response to attacks from militants, Israel bombed Gaza, Yemen, and Lebanon. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the war in this strip, which began on October 6 of last year with an attack by the extremist group Hamas, has left more than 38,900 dead. Hamas's attack on southern Israel resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 Israelis, most of whom were civilians. About 250 people were also taken hostage, with Israeli officials stating that around 120 of them are still in custody, and it is believed that about one-third of them may have been killed. Families of the hostages and thousands of other Israelis have been holding weekly protests, urging the Prime Minister to reach a ceasefire agreement to bring their loved ones home. Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to eliminate Hamas's military and governmental capabilities and to return the remaining hostages. He is scheduled to meet with American lawmakers in Washington on Wednesday, where, according to reports, he will be pressured to establish a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced on Friday that a ceasefire is close. He stated, 'I believe we are approaching an agreement that will lead to a ceasefire, the return of hostages, and put us on a better path for efforts toward peace and sustainable stability.'
