Israeli Army Reports Downing of Syrian Fighter Jet in Golan Heights

The Israeli army announced that on Tuesday, August 2, it shot down a Syrian Sukhoi fighter jet in the airspace of the Golan Heights. According to a spokesperson for the Israeli army, the Syrian jet had "penetrated approximately two kilometers into Israeli airspace" and was targeted by Israeli missiles in the Golan Heights. The Syrian fighter jet crashed within its own territory, but the fate of its pilot remains unclear. The official Syrian news agency, SANA, confirmed that Israel targeted one of its jets but remained silent on whether the Israeli missile hit the aircraft. A Syrian army official told SANA that the jet was on an operational flight against "armed terrorist groups" near the Yarmouk Valley in Syria. Israeli media reported that residents in northern settlements witnessed the firing of Patriot system missiles and then an explosion in the sky. The Israeli army declared a state of emergency but simultaneously stated that due to the intensification of the Syrian civil war, the activity of the Syrian air force has increased. Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel has only monitored the situation, claiming it was not related to the country. However, with the crisis in the border areas of Syria and Israel since 2014, this appears to be the first time Israel has downed a Syrian fighter jet. On February 10 last year, Syria hit an Israeli fighter jet during operations against "Iranian and Syrian targets," which landed in Israeli territory, and its two pilots ejected. Israel later claimed that the downing was due to "pilot error" rather than a Syrian missile hit, reprimanding the pilots despite their injuries after being discharged from the hospital. A day before downing the Syrian jet, Israel confirmed that it had used the new "David's Sling" system for the first time to intercept two ground-to-ground rockets fired from Syrian territory. The downing of the Russian-made Syrian jet by Israel occurred just hours after a meeting between the Russian Foreign Minister and Chief of Staff with the Israeli Prime Minister. Sergey Lavrov, the Russian Foreign Minister, and General Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of Staff of the Russian army, met with Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem on Monday night. A senior official from the Israeli Prime Minister's office told Reuters after the meeting that Lavrov and Gerasimov came with a proposal for Iranian forces and Tehran's allies in Syria to withdraw to 100 kilometers from the Syrian-Israeli border, but Netanyahu rejected this proposal. The Israeli Prime Minister stated that during his meetings with Lavrov and Gerasimov, as well as in face-to-face meetings with the Russian President and a recent phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, he emphasized that the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Syria should be respected. According to Netanyahu, if this agreement is revived and Iranian forces leave Syria, Israel will have no issue with Bashar al-Assad's government across Syria. The Israeli army spokesperson also stated on Tuesday after confirming the news of the downed Syrian jet that the army would respond to any action that violates the 1974 separation of forces agreement. Recently, the Syrian army has had significant successes in reclaiming areas controlled by rebels. On Tuesday, August 2, the Syrian army also approached within approximately half a kilometer of a part of the Golan Heights that has been under Israeli control for 51 years.
