Israeli Army: The Death of Three Israeli Hostages Likely 'Collateral Damage' from Last Year's Attack on a Hamas Commander

Nine months after the bodies of three hostages kidnapped by Hamas were found, the Israeli army confirmed that their deaths were likely 'collateral damage' from an Israeli airstrike targeting the hideout of a Hamas commander in northern Gaza. The Israeli army, while announcing the results of its nine-month investigation, added that the exact cause of death for these three hostages is still unclear. On Friday, November 10, 2023, Israeli fighter jets targeted the hideout of Ahmad Ghundour, a Hamas commander, in a tunnel located in northern Gaza. The bodies of these three Israeli citizens were discovered a month later, on December 14, 2023, near the site of the Israeli airstrike. According to the Israeli army's statement, 'investigative findings indicate that these three individuals were likely killed as a collateral consequence of this airstrike.' The statement further noted that based on all available information, this is a 'very probable' estimate, but the exact cause of their deaths cannot be definitively determined. Based on the Israeli army's investigations, Ron Sherman, Nick Beizer, and Elia Tolodano were held in the tunnel complex where Ahmad Ghundour operated, and the army was unaware of the presence of these hostages near the targeted location at the time of the attack. During the terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7 of last year, at least 1,200 Israeli citizens, including women, children, and the elderly, were killed, and over 250 others were taken hostage. Following this terrorist attack, Israel launched an offensive against Gaza to destroy Hamas and recover the hostages taken by Hamas.
