Israeli Defense Minister: Hezbollah's Aggression Has Brought Us Closer to a 'Critical Moment'

Yoav Gallant, the Israeli Defense Minister, stated on Tuesday, March 5, that ongoing border tensions with Hezbollah increase the likelihood of military escalation. Israel and Hezbollah, which is supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran, have exchanged fire since Hamas launched a terrorist attack on Israel on October 7, raising concerns about the risk of an all-out war. Following a meeting with Amos Hochstein, the U.S. envoy mediating between Israel and Hezbollah to end their conflict, Gallant wrote in a statement: 'We are committed to the diplomatic process, but Hezbollah's aggression brings us closer to a critical point in deciding on our military actions in Lebanon.' Hezbollah has stated that its attacks are in support of the Palestinians in Gaza and that it would agree to a ceasefire if Israel halts its attacks on Gaza. However, Hochstein warned on Monday after visiting Beirut that a temporary ceasefire would not automatically end hostilities along the southern Lebanese border and that the possibility of limited war exists. Mediators are seeking to establish a 40-day ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, which begins on March 10. Except for an Israeli airstrike in the Bekaa Valley on March 1 and a drone strike in Beirut on January 1 that killed a senior Hamas leader, most clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have occurred near the border between the two countries. On Monday, the Lebanese government announced that three members of the emergency response team of a Hezbollah-affiliated group were killed in an Israeli attack. Additionally, an Israeli civilian in the north of the country was killed due to an attack from Lebanese territory. Reports indicate that Israeli attacks since October have resulted in the deaths of over 200 Hezbollah militants and about 50 civilians. Dozens of soldiers and six Israeli civilians have also died due to Hezbollah attacks. Tens of thousands of Israelis and Lebanese have fled from villages on both sides of the border. Following the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the kidnapping of over 250 others, Israel launched an offensive against Gaza aimed at destroying this Iran-backed militant group. The United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, Japan, Israel, and several other countries worldwide have listed the Palestinian group Hamas as a terrorist organization.
