Israeli Defense Minister Warns Guterres About Iran's Presence at Its Borders

Yoav Gallant, the Israeli Defense Minister, met with Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, on Monday night, warning about the influence of the Islamic Republic in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. According to the Jerusalem Post, Gallant, along with Gilad Erdan, Israel's ambassador to the UN, stated that the Islamic Republic of Iran, along with Hezbollah in Lebanon, is pursuing provocative actions at Israel's northern border (the border with Lebanon). He referred to the installation of Hezbollah tents in the Shebaa Farms as evidence of his claim. Just a day before this meeting, the Israeli army announced that its security forces had successfully thwarted attempts to smuggle explosives from Iran to Israel through Jordan over the past month. During the meeting, the Israeli Defense Minister urged the UN to take action against the tensions created by the Islamic Republic and Hezbollah. The Jerusalem Post reported that the Israeli Defense Minister proposed that UNIFIL forces, or the UN peacekeeping forces in southern Lebanon, prevent the infiltration of Iran and Hezbollah. Yoav Gallant wrote on his X (Twitter) account about this meeting: 'In our important meeting, we discussed the Islamic Republic's efforts to send terrorist organizations to act against Israel.' Iranian officials have yet to respond to these statements, but concurrently with this meeting, Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, warned about UNIFIL's activities, stating: 'The Americans want to turn UNIFIL into Israeli spies in Lebanon. We are forced to impose this situation due to official political positions, as some see UNIFIL's presence as beneficial for Lebanon.' The UN peacekeeping forces stationed in Lebanon were established after the crisis between Lebanon and Israel in 1978 at the border of the two countries.
