Israeli Defense Minister: We Will Impose a 'Heavy Price' on Our Enemies

Amid increasing speculation about a potential attack by the Iranian government and Hezbollah on Israel, Yoav Gallant, Israel's Defense Minister, announced on Sunday, August 5, the country's 'strong readiness' for a 'rapid response' to any attack. The Defense Minister stated, 'We are strongly prepared for defense, on land and in the air, and ready to take swift action for an attack or response.' Gallant warned that Israel would impose a 'heavy price' on its enemies, just as it has in the past. Earlier, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, said in his weekly cabinet meeting that Israel is in a 'multi-front war against the axis of evil of Iran.' The Prime Minister emphasized, 'We will strike each of [Iran's] arms with great force.' Netanyahu added, 'We are prepared for any scenario—whether offensive or defensive.' He warned Israel's 'enemies,' saying, 'We will respond and impose a heavy price for any aggressive action against us from any direction.' In another part of his remarks, Netanyahu reiterated his commitment to bringing back all hostages taken by Hamas during the terrorist attack on October 7 and stated that he is willing to show significant flexibility to achieve their freedom while considering Israel's security. Netanyahu mentioned that the Rafah border crossing and the Philadelphia corridor along the Gaza-Egypt border play a vital role in rearming Hamas, and the Israeli army will not leave this area despite the demands of this Iran-backed group. Netanyahu's statements come amid unprecedented regional tensions following the killing of Foad Shukr, a military commander of Hezbollah, and Ismail Haniyeh, a senior member of Hamas, last week, with many considering a direct confrontation between the Iranian government and Israel highly likely. According to Axios news site, Washington and Jerusalem officials expect the Islamic Republic and its proxy forces to retaliate for the killings of Foad Shukr and Ismail Haniyeh by attacking Israel starting Tuesday. The Pentagon announced on Friday, August 3, that it is moving a squadron of fighter jets to the Middle East and maintaining an aircraft carrier in the region to bolster U.S. military presence to assist in defending Israel and protecting American forces. Israel and the U.S. are coordinating a regional and international coalition to repel potential attacks similar to the Islamic Republic's attack on April 14. At the same time, many countries around the world have urged their citizens in Lebanon, as well as Israel and Iran, to leave these countries. Most international airlines have also canceled their flights to the region, especially to the three mentioned countries. The U.S. and the U.K. have urged their citizens to leave Lebanon immediately. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed after a 'great defeat' that Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a 'short-range projectile.' Tensions in the Middle East have increased, and several other airlines have canceled flights. The Islamic Republic's representative stated that Hezbollah may target Israeli civilians and soldiers in response to the killing of Foad Shukr. The Pentagon announced a change in the U.S. military posture in the Middle East to defend Israel and reduce tensions. Yoav Gallant stated that U.S.-Israeli cooperation against the Islamic Republic and its proxies is 'vital.' Poland warned its citizens not to travel to 'Iran, Israel, and Lebanon.'
