Israeli Defense Minister's Message to American Counterpart Regarding 'Challenges Related to Iran'

The Israeli Defense Minister, in a congratulatory message to his American counterpart Pete Hegseth in Donald Trump's administration, wrote that 'Iran and its partners continue to threaten regional and global stability.' Yisrael Katz added in his message: 'The coming months will present us with challenges that require military readiness and opportunities that allow us to advance our strategic goals.' According to Israeli newspapers Jerusalem Post and Yedioth Ahronoth on Sunday, February 7, Katz's reference in the message to Hegseth concerns 'possible action against Iran in the coming months.' The Jerusalem Post reminded that Katz recently stated Israel is more prepared than ever to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, and several other Israeli and American officials have reiterated this statement in recent months. Katz further stated in his message to Hegseth: 'I am confident that together we can succeed (in advancing strategic goals) and create long-term stability and a better future for the region.' According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the Israeli Defense Minister also wrote that since the attack by the extremist group Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, 'Israel has fought on seven fronts against Iran's multidimensional threats, achieved significant accomplishments, and has significantly weakened the factors that sought to destroy Israel.' He added that America's support for Israel during the war 'was a testament to the strength and importance of the defense partnership' and 'proved that when we stand together, we are stronger.' Pete Hegseth, who received the necessary votes in the Senate for the Defense Minister position in Donald Trump's administration on February 5, began his term on February 6 after taking the oath at the Pentagon. The new U.S. Defense Minister stated: 'We do not want to fight; we want to prevent war.' Hegseth has emphasized broad support for Israel during his tenure as a Fox News host and in Senate confirmation hearings for the Defense Minister position. This former National Guard officer has stated that as a Christian believer, he feels obligated to defend Israel. The U.S. Department of Defense announced that Hegseth spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday in his first call as Defense Minister. According to a Pentagon statement, the U.S. Defense Minister and Netanyahu discussed 'the importance of advancing mutual security interests and priorities, especially in confronting ongoing threats.' Hegseth told the Israeli Prime Minister that under President Trump's leadership, the U.S. is 'fully committed to ensuring that Israel has the necessary capabilities to defend itself.' Both sides agreed to continue 'close contact' with each other. Additionally, Netanyahu expressed gratitude on Sunday for Donald Trump's message regarding providing heavy weapons to Israel. Trump ordered at the beginning of the week that 2,000-pound bombs, which the Biden administration had halted sending to Israel during the Gaza war and Israel's military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon, be made available to this U.S. ally again. Netanyahu will meet with Donald Trump at the White House in early February. The discussions will include the fate of Gaza, the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, and Iran's nuclear program. This meeting comes at a critical juncture regarding the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the release of hostages. Trump has stated that he will work to expand the Abraham Accords and emphasized that Iran should not acquire nuclear weapons.
