Israeli Embassy Staff in Jordan Return to Tel Aviv

An official from the Israeli Prime Minister's office stated on Monday that the staff of the Israeli embassy in Amman, including a security personnel who shot at two Jordanian citizens, have returned to Tel Aviv. According to Reuters, a security personnel at the Israeli embassy in Amman shot at a Jordanian citizen who attacked him with a screwdriver on Sunday evening. This Jordanian citizen, who was working inside the embassy, was killed along with another person who was watching the incident. It is reported that the Israeli security personnel sustained minor injuries in the incident. Reuters states that Jordan has requested to interrogate this Israeli security personnel, but Israel has claimed that this embassy guard enjoys diplomatic immunity. The Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that the guard shot the attacker in self-defense. The father of the deceased claims that his 16-year-old son had no connection with militant groups. An official told Reuters that the other person was accidentally killed in this incident. The Israeli Prime Minister's office also announced in a statement that the return of the embassy staff to Amman was made possible thanks to close cooperation between Israel and Jordan. The shooting incident at the embassy occurred amid recent Palestinian protests against the installation of metal detectors at the entrances to Al-Aqsa Mosque, leading to clashes with Israelis. On Friday, July 30, and Saturday, July 31, five Palestinians were killed, and three members of an Israeli family were stabbed to death in their home in the West Bank. Israeli public opinion remains affected by the manner of the killing of these three Israeli family members, and thousands of Israelis attended their funeral on Sunday, August 1. The government of Benjamin Netanyahu held its third emergency meeting on Sunday evening to review the situation. Palestinians have rejected the installation of more security cameras instead of metal detectors and have also requested their removal. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Jason Greenblatt, the special representative of Donald Trump, the President of the United States, for Middle East affairs, has traveled to the region and is set to negotiate with the parties involved to reduce recent tensions. The UN Secretary-General's representative for Middle East peace has also warned of escalating violence.
