Israeli Foreign Minister Calls for the Death of New Hamas Leader and Eradication of the Organization

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz called for the death of Yahya Sinwar, the new leader of Hamas. Katz described Sinwar as the 'main terrorist' on the social media platform X, stating that his appointment as Hamas leader is 'another compelling reason for his swift elimination and the eradication of this organization from the face of the earth.' Israel has not claimed responsibility for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, the former leader of Hamas, but his death on July 31 in Tehran led Islamic Republic leaders to blame Israel for his death and commit to accountability. The Islamic Republic has been financially and militarily supporting Hamas for years. Opponents of the Islamic Republic argue that the funds spent on Hamas and other terrorist organizations should be used for development in Iran. On Wednesday, Hamas introduced Sinwar, one of the architects of the October 7 terrorist attack from Gaza to Israel, as its new leader. Katz commented on this announcement, saying that Hamas's action 'sends a clear message to the world that the Palestinian issue is now fully controlled by [the Islamic Republic of] Iran and Hamas.' Katz also stated that Israel must maintain security control in areas it occupies in the West Bank to prevent the establishment of another 'extremist base' by the Islamic Republic of Iran. He said that the establishment of such a base by the Islamic Republic would be detrimental to the world and all countries in the Middle East. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed optimism about Yahya Sinwar's selection as Hamas's new leader, stating that he has the necessary ability to ensure a ceasefire agreement, end the war in Gaza, and secure the release of hostages, as Sinwar 'has always been the main decision-maker for ceasefires.' Blinken noted that Sinwar, by moving towards a ceasefire, could help many Palestinians, including women, children, and men caught in the crossfire, escape from the crisis. The Middle East is at risk of escalating crises; U.S. F-18 and F-22 jets have been deployed to the region. A Pakistani national was arrested on suspicion of attempting to hire a 'hitman' on behalf of the Islamic Republic. The Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces stated: 'We will find Sinwar; his new title does not change the fact that he is a 'killer.' Israel is on high alert following threats from the Islamic Republic and Hezbollah; Netanyahu stated: 'We will strike our enemies and defend ourselves.' Macron, in a call with Pezeshkian, emphasized the need to end the 'cycle of violence.' U.S. Defense Secretary warned proxies: 'The United States will not tolerate attacks on its forces in the Middle East.'
