Israeli Intelligence Assessment Indicates Over One Third of Hostages Dead; Signs of Execution Found in Some Bodies

While the United States seeks to advance a proposed agreement to end the conflicts in Gaza, a government statistic shows that Israel believes more than one third of the remaining hostages in Gaza have been killed. According to Reuters, of the approximately 250 individuals taken hostage by armed Hamas militants during the terrorist attack on October 7, which sparked the war, many were released during a ceasefire last December, while others were discovered dead or alive by Israeli soldiers. On Monday, June 3, four more hostages were added to the list of Israeli fatalities. Israeli government statistics indicate that based on intelligence data, out of 120 hostages from the Gaza war, 43 are assessed to be dead. This assessment was made by Israeli officials based on various intelligence sources, including CCTV footage and forensic analysis. According to Reuters, some officials have privately stated that the number of killed hostages may be higher than 43. Hamas had threatened at the beginning of the war that it would kill hostages if Israeli airstrikes continued. Israel has not completely denied this, but has stated that some of the bodies of the hostages found show signs of execution. U.S. President Joe Biden, in his remarks on Friday presenting a three-phase ceasefire plan, urged Israeli leadership to resist pressure from those in Israel advocating for the continuation of the war 'indefinitely.' He called on Israel and Hamas to accept a ceasefire agreement for the release of about one hundred remaining hostages and the return of the bodies of approximately 30 deceased hostages. However, mediation efforts to achieve this agreement have stalled due to Israel's insistence on resuming its campaign to destroy Hamas, while the Palestinian Islamist group demands a guaranteed end to the war and the withdrawal of all Israeli forces. The war in Gaza began in response to terrorist attacks by Hamas and their allies on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which Israeli officials say resulted in about 1,200 deaths and over 250 hostages taken. Many countries around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Israel, Japan, and the European Union, have designated Hamas as a terrorist organization.
