Israeli Media Reports Netanyahu's Discontent with Hostage Negotiation Team

Channel 12 and Kan Israel TV reported that the Prime Minister of Israel on Sunday accused members of the negotiation team for the release of hostages held by Hamas of 'providing false information' and threatened to dismiss them. According to these media outlets, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the explanations and false statements from the negotiation team harm the government's efforts to bring back the hostages and spread despair among the families of the hostages. The Israeli Prime Minister added, 'If someone in the negotiation team is not prepared to accept political decisions and wants to produce false headlines for political purposes, it is better for them to step aside or be removed from this position.' The Israeli negotiation team is making frequent trips to Paris, Cairo, and Doha to negotiate the release of the remaining 129 hostages, who have been held by this Iranian-backed Palestinian group since last year's Hamas attack. According to Israeli sources, this team is led by David Barnea, head of Mossad, Ronen Bar, head of Shin Bet, and Nitzan Alon, a commander in the Israeli army. Two members of the Israeli negotiation team claimed anonymously in a recent Channel 12 program that Netanyahu is indifferent to the fate of the hostages and has undermined efforts to reach an agreement with Hamas. One of them stated, 'I can't say that there would have been an agreement without Netanyahu, but I can say that without Netanyahu, the chances of reaching a better agreement would have been higher.' Following the October 7 attack last year by Hamas militants on Israel, at least 1,200 people were killed, most of whom were civilians. The Palestinian Islamist militants also took more than 230 hostages, including young children and the elderly. During a one-week ceasefire between Israel and Hamas last January, about a hundred hostages were exchanged for several Palestinian prisoners, but around 130 hostages remain captive by Hamas, with uncertainty about how many of them are alive.
