Israeli Police Arrest Suspects for Insulting Christian Pilgrims and Churches in Jerusalem

Israeli police announced on Wednesday, October 4, that several suspects who had insulted Christian pilgrims and churches in Jerusalem have been arrested. According to the Associated Press, the police indicated that the detainees had spat at these pilgrims and churches. The news agency reported that these arrests come amid renewed religious tensions in Jerusalem, a city considered sacred by followers of three religions. As Jewish people celebrate 'Sukkot', a week-long harvest festival, the presence of extremist Orthodox Jews in the streets has heightened tensions, including incidents of spitting. One of the individuals was arrested after a video of him spitting earlier in the week sparked widespread criticism on social media. The video showed extremist Orthodox Jews spitting at the feet of foreign Christian pilgrims in the Old City of Jerusalem. The police also arrested four other suspects on Wednesday for spitting towards Christian churches. Din al-Sadoun, a police spokesperson, stated that one person was charged with this act, while four others were charged with illegal disorderly conduct. Videos circulating on social media depict a group of extremist Orthodox Jews celebrating Sukkot and spitting at the entrance of an ancient church in Jerusalem. According to the Associated Press, such footage has raised concerns about increasing intolerance among religious Jews. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Chief Rabbi of Israel, and other senior officials condemned these actions on Tuesday, October 10. Nonetheless, the report indicates that Christians, the vast majority of whom are Palestinians, associate the rise in vandalism and anti-Christian attacks with Netanyahu's far-right government, which they claim emboldens Jewish extremists. Christians accuse Mr. Netanyahu's government of ignoring their complaints and say it has failed to take action to prevent the rise of religiously motivated harassment. Meanwhile, the Israeli government condemned spitting at pilgrims and Christian churches and promised that the police would address this phenomenon.
