Israelis Banned from Attending Paris International Arms Exhibition

A French court's decision to prohibit the presence of Israeli citizens and non-Israelis associated with Israeli arms manufacturers at a major arms exhibition in France has sparked outrage in Israel. Prior to the court's ruling, Emmanuel Macron's government had already made an unprecedented decision to ban Israeli military industries from the exhibition. The Eurosatory arms exhibition is set to begin on Monday, June 18. 74 Israeli companies were scheduled to participate in the five-day event near Paris's international airport. This annual event is one of the largest military equipment exhibitions in the world, with 1,700 companies from 150 countries participating this year. In previous years, the arms industry, especially Israeli manufacturers of air defense systems, played a significant role in this French annual exhibition, signing large contracts with governments interested in acquiring their products due to global attention on their offerings. The French Ministry of Defense stated that the conditions were not suitable for hosting Israeli companies at the exhibition. The French ambassador in Tel Aviv mentioned last week in an interview with Israeli Channel Kan that the decision by Macron's government to deny Israel access to the exhibition was made in consideration of public demands to stop the Gaza war. The ambassador referenced the outrage and protests in France over the deaths of dozens of Palestinians during a three-week Israeli military operation in Rafah aimed at killing two Hamas militants. Emmanuel Macron expressed anger over the death of 45 civilians in the Rafah incident and emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza conflict. Following Macron's statements, the French Ministry of Defense issued a ban on the presence of Israeli military industries at the exhibition. Meanwhile, a court in the suburbs of Paris on Friday, June 15, expanded the ban on the presence of Israeli companies following a complaint from Palestinian advocacy groups, ruling that employees of Israeli companies and non-Israelis working for Israeli companies must be prevented from attending. The court ordered the exhibition organizers to install large signs at the entrance clearly stating that companies and representatives of Israeli firms and any other agents related to Israel are not allowed entry. According to Yedioth Ahronoth, the ban on companies associated with Israel 'also includes American companies.' Charles Bedouin, the exhibition director, stated that the court's ruling goes beyond the decision of the French Ministry of Defense and that he will take 'the quickest measures' to appeal the ruling, but for now, the exhibition officials are following the court's decision. The French presidency has reportedly 'supported' the filing of an appeal against the court's ruling, and the appeal ruling may be issued as soon as Monday, coinciding with the opening of the exhibition. However, according to the Times of Israel, the exhibition organizers said there is no ban on Israeli visitors, and Israelis working for non-Israeli companies can visit the venue. Palestinian advocacy groups welcomed the French court's decision to prevent individuals associated with Israeli companies from attending the exhibition. The Israeli economic newspaper Globes reported that 'African dictators' will sign multi-billion euro arms contracts at the French exhibition, and representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran will move freely, while Israel has been banned from participating. According to Globes, this event represents an unprecedented decline in trade relations between France and Israel. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz also viewed it as a sign of the potential for economic sanctions against Israel by other countries. According to Israeli Channel Kan, comments by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant rejecting France's proposal for mediation between Israel and Hezbollah stem from France's recent stricter approach regarding the war in Gaza. On June 14, Emmanuel Macron announced the 'achievement of an agreement' to form a trilateral French-American-Israeli committee to reduce tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, General Galant stated on June 15 that while Israel is in its 'most just battle,' France has adopted a 'hostile policy' against Israel and has 'ignored' Hamas's blatant crimes against women and children, which were committed solely because of their Jewish identity. The Élysée Palace rejected the Israeli defense minister's comments, denying Macron's government's bias in the Gaza war.
