Israel's Request for Evacuation of Parts of Southern Gaza; Army Claims Hamas is Sheltering in 'Humanitarian' Area

On Monday, August 1, the Israeli army issued an order to evacuate part of the designated 'humanitarian' area in southern Gaza, announcing plans to conduct military operations in the region where Hamas forces are said to be 'sheltering.' According to the army, this area includes the eastern part of the humanitarian zone 'Musa' located in southern Gaza, where 'Hamas militants are hiding behind human shields and endangering the lives of Israeli citizens by launching rockets.' Throughout its nearly ten-month war with Islamist militants from Hamas, Israel has repeatedly stated that the group's forces hide behind Palestinian civilian 'human shields' to harm Israeli targets. This announcement comes as American and Israeli officials expressed hope that ceasefire negotiations in Gaza are closer to an agreement than ever, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu traveling to the United States to address Congress. The Gaza Health Ministry, which is affiliated with Hamas, claims that over 38,900 Palestinians have been killed during the war with this Iran-backed group, but it does not specify how many of these casualties are Hamas fighters. The war began with Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, a terrorist assault that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people, mostly civilians. During this attack, Hamas also took around 250 hostages, with Israeli officials stating that about 120 of these hostages are still held captive. The deaths of two more hostages in Hamas captivity have been reported; fighting in Gaza continues. Netanyahu, on the eve of his trip to Washington, stated that Israel's enemies should know that the U.S. and Israel stand together today, tomorrow, and always. Netanyahu's office announced that the Israeli negotiating team would depart for the resumption of talks on Thursday. Following Israel's attack on the Houthis, Saudi Arabia called for 'maximum restraint.' The Israeli Foreign Minister stated that Erdogan has turned Turkey into a 'terrorism-supporting' country. Israeli fighter jets attacked 'two military warehouses' of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
