Israel's Supreme Court Suspends Government's Decision to Dismiss Shin Bet Chief

Hours after the cabinet under Benjamin Netanyahu voted to dismiss the head of the Shin Bet, Israel's Supreme Court temporarily suspended this decision. On Friday, March 21, the Israeli cabinet unanimously approved Netanyahu's proposal to dismiss Ronen Bar, the head of the internal security service (Shin Bet). The Prime Minister's Office announced that Ronen Bar's responsibilities would end on April 10 or whenever a new director is appointed. Meanwhile, Mr. Bar, who was not present at the cabinet meeting, described the dismissal process in a letter to ministers as 'against the law' and based on 'baseless claims.' The Supreme Court's ruling allows for complaints against Netanyahu's decision to be addressed, with a result expected by April 8, two weeks from now. In recent days, Netanyahu had informed Ronen Bar that he intended to ask the government to approve his dismissal this week. The Israeli Prime Minister justified his decision by stating that he had long lost trust in Bar, emphasizing the importance of trust in the head of the internal security service, especially during wartime. The decision to dismiss Ronen Bar came after months of tension between them regarding investigations alleging that some of Netanyahu's aides received 'bribes' from individuals connected to Qatar. Netanyahu has denied these allegations, suggesting that the political effort to dismiss Bar is behind these claims. The dismissal was made public after 'tens of thousands' protested in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv against Netanyahu's new government decisions. Protesters labeled Bar's dismissal as an 'attack on democracy' and criticized Netanyahu's policy of disrupting a two-month ceasefire and attacking Gaza again, especially since dozens of Israelis are still held hostage there. Protesters, who are expected to return to the streets in the coming days, have accused Netanyahu of continuing the war solely for political reasons and disregarding the fate of 59 hostages, 24 of whom are said to still be alive. The war, which began with a surprise attack by the extremist group Hamas on October 7, 2023, is considered one of Israel's greatest security failures, resulting in 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages. Hamas is listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. and the EU. Ronen Bar had previously announced that he would resign early due to accepting responsibility for intelligence failures that led to this attack.
