Istanbul Mayor Denies Charges Against Him; Hundreds Arrested in Turkey Protests

Reuters reported based on court documents in Turkey that Ekrem İmamoğlu, the mayor of Istanbul, has denied the terrorism-related charges brought against him. The news agency reported on Saturday, April 2, that Mr. İmamoğlu, who was arrested last Wednesday, described the allegations against him and his colleagues as 'unimaginable accusations and slanders' during an interrogation conducted by Turkey's anti-terror police. The Associated Press also reported that Ekrem İmamoğlu was interrogated by police for five hours on Saturday, and hundreds of his supporters gathered outside the courthouse in the Çağlayan district of Istanbul. The mayor of Istanbul is a significant figure in the opposition to the Turkish government and is considered the main rival of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the upcoming elections. After being interrogated by the police, he was transferred to court to face prosecutors alongside about 90 others who were arrested simultaneously. Reports indicate that hundreds have gathered in support of him for the fourth consecutive night outside the Istanbul municipality building. Protests against the arrest of the Istanbul mayor continued on Friday despite warnings from the president and a four-day ban imposed by the government. According to Reuters, tensions increased on Friday, April 1, in what has been described as 'the largest display of civil disobedience' in Turkey in the past decade. The Turkish Interior Minister announced on Saturday that police arrested 343 people during protests on Friday night in major cities, including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Adana, and Antalya. Earlier that day, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan warned at a rally in Istanbul that his government would not tolerate 'disruption of public order' and 'vandalism.' Protesters believe that the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu by Erdoğan's government on charges of 'corruption and links to terrorist networks' is actually a political attempt to 'eliminate' one of his main rivals from the presidential race in Turkey's 2028 elections. The Republican People's Party, of which İmamoğlu, 54, is a member, has also deemed the mayor's arrest politically motivated and called for continued peaceful protests. In contrast, Erdoğan and his party, the Justice and Development Party, have denied any involvement in the current events, stating that the mayor's arrest is a judicial matter, not political. According to Reuters, large gatherings were held in several cities, including Istanbul, on Friday night, the third day of protests, following a call from the Republican People's Party. The party leader stated that the number of protesters was 300,000. The Istanbul police resorted to pepper spray and water cannons to disperse protesters on Friday evening, and clashes occurred between riot police and crowds in Ankara and Izmir. While Ekrem İmamoğlu denied all corruption charges at the time of his arrest, a court is set to decide by Sunday whether this political figure should be formally detained. İmamoğlu, along with several other prominent political figures, including two regional mayors, was arrested during a police raid on his home on March 19, 2024. He was arrested just days before he was to be announced as a candidate for the upcoming presidential elections in Turkey. The arrest of this popular opposition leader has raised concerns about the decline of democracy in Turkey.
