Jamaah Islamiyah Responsible for Over 12 Bombings in Indonesia

According to a report on terrorism in South Asia, the Jamaah Islamiyah group has been responsible for over 12 bombings in Indonesia over the past two and a half years. This report, prepared by the International Crisis Group based in Brussels, states that Jamaah Islamiyah has a wide network within Indonesia. Most of its members are Indonesian nationals who have lived in Malaysia and have carried out several terrorist actions in Indonesia. Among these actions were a series of attacks on several churches in 2000, which resulted in the deaths of 19 people. The bombing on the resort island of Bali, which led to the deaths of 200 people, has also been attributed to this group. In another development, Indonesian police say they have arrested the main suspect in connection with last week's bombing at a McDonald's restaurant and a car dealership in the country. Officials say that Ayung Abdul Hamid, who is said to be the organizer and coordinator of these bombings, was arrested in Central Java. He is the fifth suspect to be arrested in connection with these bombings. Meanwhile, today, interrogations began for eight others who were arrested in connection with the Bali bombing in Java. It is said that the mastermind of the bombing operations, who is a regional leader of the Jamaah Islamiyah terrorist group, is also among this group. More than 200 people were killed in this bombing. The police have so far arrested 20 people in connection with this case.
