Jimmy Carter Calls for Support of Donald Trump

Jimmy Carter, one of the former presidents of the United States, expressed his desire for good relations with Donald Trump. Carter served only one term as president, winning the 1976 election as a Democratic candidate but losing to Republican Ronald Reagan four years later. He is one of two U.S. presidents in the past four decades to serve only one term, the other being George H.W. Bush. After leaving the White House, Carter has lived longer than any other former president. However, all former presidents, including Carter, came to Washington. Carter added, "I was the only former president who said long ago that I would attend the ceremony. I think we should get to know the new president. I believe we should support him." Carter spoke with a Voice of America reporter at the Carter Center in Atlanta, Georgia, sharing his views on the new U.S. leader. The former president stated, "Our goal is to establish good relations with all new presidents. We hope these relations will be beneficial for Donald Trump and his new administration and will help us achieve our goals in specific areas of the world when they deem it appropriate." He further mentioned, "For example, we are preparing a report for the defense and foreign ministers that will outline our plans for activities in Syria and how President Putin is dealing with it." During his presidency, Carter helped the governments of Egypt and Israel resolve their enmity and disputes. The Camp David Accords were the first permanent peace agreement between the two countries, signed in 1978. Carter expressed hope that Donald Trump would work to end the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. He added, "The Carter Center has had permanent offices in Jerusalem, Ramallah, and Gaza for about 35 years. We have accurate internal information regarding events within the borders of what we call the Holy Land." Carter became president in 1976 when the U.S. was gradually moving past the scandals of the Richard Nixon administration. Many Americans, like today, were angry with the government. They voted for Carter, who, like Donald Trump, had never held a federal office. Although Carter was a governor of Georgia before his presidency, Trump had never run for political office until his presidential nomination. Carter stated, "Donald Trump has never participated in political and national affairs and therefore has much to learn. Sometimes, like me, learning will come at a high cost."
