Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, passed away at the age of 100. Chip Carter, Mr. Carter's son, announced that his father died at 3:45 PM local time on Sunday, January 9, at his home in Plains, Georgia. Jimmy Carter, who lived longer than any other U.S. president, had been hospitalized several times in recent years and had been receiving home healthcare since February 2023. Mr. Carter served as President from 1977 to 1981 as a Democrat, but the Iran hostage crisis and the fuel crisis in the United States led to a significant defeat in the next election. However, his human rights and environmental activism later restored his popularity, and according to Reuters, his post-presidency period became more popular than his time in office. Mr. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, and the Nobel Peace Committee praised him for his 'tireless efforts to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts.' In response to Mr. Carter's passing, U.S. President Joe Biden expressed condolences and announced that he had ordered a formal memorial service for him. The President referred to Mr. Carter as 'a man of principles, faith, and humility' and stated in a statement that he worked with compassion and ethics to eradicate diseases, establish peace, advance civil rights and human rights, promote free and fair elections, and house the homeless, always being a defender of minorities. Donald Trump, the elected President of the United States, referred to Jimmy Carter as someone who 'did everything he could to improve the lives of all Americans.' The elected President noted the challenges and sensitive situations that Jimmy Carter faced, stating, 'It is up to all of us to appreciate him.' Barack Obama, the former President, wrote in a message: 'President Carter taught us all what it means to live a life full of grace, dignity, justice, and service.'
