Joe Biden Announces 500 New Sanctions Against Russia

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, announced on Friday, February 23, that the U.S. will impose over 500 new sanctions against Russia in commemoration of the second anniversary of the war in Ukraine. In his statement, Biden said, "The United States will also impose new export restrictions on nearly 100 companies due to their support for Russia and will take further actions to reduce Russia's energy revenues." Biden described the aim of the new restrictions and sanctions as holding Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, accountable for the invasion of Ukraine, the repression within that country, and the death of Alexei Navalny, the opposition leader. He stated that these sanctions target individuals connected to Navalny's imprisonment as well as the financial sector, Russia's defense industrial complex, supply chains, and all those who assist Putin's war machine by evading sanctions against Russia across various continents. The U.S. President emphasized the necessity of passing a supplemental national security budget bill in Congress, part of which includes financial aid to Ukraine, saying, "Their ammunition is running out. Ukraine needs more supplies from the United States to counter the relentless Russian attacks, which are made possible with weapons and ammunition from Iran and North Korea." Biden added, "The brave people of Ukraine continue to fight and do not waver in their resolve to defend their freedom and future. NATO is stronger, larger, and more united than ever, and an unprecedented global coalition of 50 countries supporting Ukraine, led by the United States, remains committed to providing vital assistance to Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its aggressions." The U.S. Departments of State and Treasury also issued statements detailing more about these sanctions. Wally Adeyemo, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, said on Thursday that the new round of sanctions, conducted in cooperation with other countries, targets Moscow's military-industrial complex and companies in third countries that facilitate Russia's access to necessary goods. The U.S. Treasury also stated that this sanctions package is the latest series of sanctions that the U.S. and its allies have imposed on Moscow following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, which resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and widespread destruction. The European Union also approved its thirteenth package of sanctions related to Ukraine against Russia on Wednesday, targeting nearly 200 entities and individuals accused of helping Moscow procure weapons or being involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children. Britain also imposed new sanctions against over 50 individuals and entities linked to Russia. According to British officials, the aim of these sanctions is to reduce Russia's revenue sources from foreign trade, including diamonds, metals, and energy.
