Joe Biden Calls for a 'Fair Agreement' for Striking Writers in Hollywood

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, in his first comments regarding the writers' strike in Hollywood, called for a 'fair agreement' for them. He made these remarks on Monday, May 8, at the White House during an event for the premiere of 'American Born Chinese,' a new series from Disney's streaming network. According to the Associated Press, the event, held in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, was attended by several actors, production staff, community leaders, elected officials, government members, and special guests. Biden stated, 'Nights like this remind us of the stories and the importance of treating storytellers with dignity, respect, and the value they deserve.' He further added, 'I sincerely hope that the issue of the writers' strike in Hollywood is resolved and that they reach a fair agreement that they deserve as soon as possible.' According to Biden, 'This is a symbolic and meaningful American industry, and we need all writers, staff, and contributors to tell the story of our nation and all of us.' The Hollywood writers' strike, which began last week, has shut down American talk shows and halted the production of many television programs and series. This strike is in protest against major studios, streaming networks, and distributors, with writers demanding higher wages and job security in the industry. The series 'American Born Chinese' is based on a graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, and it will premiere on Disney Plus on May 24. The series features several prominent actors, including Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, both Oscar winners. Biden also referenced his administration's efforts to highlight the achievements of Asian American communities, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, condemning prejudice and violence against them. He stated, 'Hatred cannot have a safe haven in America; silence is complicity with hatred, and we will not be silent.' Ke Huy Quan, one of the actors in the series who introduced Biden at the event, shared his journey as an eight-year-old refugee from Vietnam to becoming an Oscar winner and attending the White House. He emphasized the significance of 'this moment,' stating, 'This building is one of the monuments of a country that has opened its arms to me.'
