Joe Biden Invites CIA Director William Burns to Join His Cabinet

Joe Biden, the President of the United States, announced that he has asked William Burns, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), to join his cabinet. According to Reuters, Biden stated in a press release that Burns' approach to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the U.S. competition with China provides a 'clear and long-term approach to our nation's key national security challenges.' Reuters noted that 'this move is largely symbolic and does not grant Burns any new powers.' Burns, who became the first professional diplomat to lead the CIA in 2021, has played a 'significant role in national security decision-making, especially regarding Russia and China.' Daniel Byman, director of the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, described this action as 'a testament to Burns' unparalleled effectiveness' before it is a decision about the CIA's role in the cabinet. Byman stated, 'Burns has been a very important part of Biden's foreign policy and has served as an intelligence leader as well as a diplomat in Ukraine, the Middle East, and other parts of the world.' According to Byman, Biden wants to leverage Burns' knowledge and skills in shaping his foreign policy. William Burns, an alumnus of La Salle University in Philadelphia and a graduate of Oxford University, joined the U.S. State Department in 1982. He was the U.S. ambassador to Russia in 2005 and has also served as a senior advisor to former U.S. Secretaries of State, including Warren Christopher and Madeleine Albright. He retired in 2014 after 33 years of service in the State Department but returned to the U.S. political scene with Biden's victory.
