Joseph Lieberman, Former Senator and Chairman of the 'Alliance Against a Nuclear Iran,' Passes Away at 82

Joseph Lieberman, a former Democratic senator from Connecticut who nearly became Vice President alongside Al Gore in the 2000 election, passed away at the age of 82. According to a statement released by his family and reported by the Associated Press, he died on Wednesday in New York due to complications from a fall. Lieberman was also the chairman of the 'Alliance Against a Nuclear Iran,' a non-profit organization established in 2008 to prevent the Islamic Republic from becoming a nuclear power. The veteran politician had told supporters of negotiations with the Islamic Republic: 'Those who want to negotiate with the Iranian regime should know that this path has been taken before and has led nowhere.' Lieberman later became an independent politician. His criticism of Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee in the 2008 presidential election, affected many of his former party members. Nevertheless, his support for LGBTQ+ rights, civil rights, abortion rights, and environmental goals earned him praise over the years. A Yale Law School graduate, Lieberman served as Attorney General of Connecticut from 1983 to 1988 and was a staunch advocate for consumer rights. The 'Alliance Against a Nuclear Iran' expressed concerns about the implications of the hostage release agreement with Hamas and called for military action against the IRGC positions in Iran, stating that the Islamic Republic poses a direct threat to maritime freedom.
