Judiciary's Action Against Concert Organizers in Tehran Following Video Release

Following the release of a short video from a concert that provoked negative reactions from government supporters, the judiciary announced it would take action against the concert's organizers. Early on Friday, April 8, news emerged that Sohrab Pakzad, a pop singer, had been arrested. Following this news, Mizan, the judiciary's news agency, reported that the release of a clip from a concert by a singer in Tehran led to the identification of those involved in organizing the concert. Mizan further stated, 'After identifying all individuals involved in the preparation and distribution of the inappropriate clip, legal and judicial action was taken against those involved.' The news agency did not name these individuals but mentioned that 'legal and judicial action' had been taken against the concert's producer, the clip's director, the organizer, and the singer. According to the news website Tabnak on Friday, government supporters on social media labeled images of 'unveiled women' at Sohrab Pakzad's concert as 'equivalent to prostitution' and demanded that the head of the judiciary take action against this pop singer. Concurrently with the crackdown on the concert's organizers, Pakzad's Instagram page was reportedly blocked by the Cyber Space Center and the police for moral crimes. In Iran, it is not uncommon for news of the arrest or crackdown on one or two singers, especially female singers, to emerge weekly. Reports from last Esfand indicated that the Islamic Republic's crackdown on female singers had intensified, with several female singers' Instagram accounts being blocked by judicial orders in recent days. Following the widespread protests of 'Women, Life, Freedom,' which began after the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody and continued for months, many girls and women in the streets no longer adhere to the mandatory hijab mandated by the government. It seems that Islamic Republic officials prefer to ignore this trend as the movement gains momentum and only take action when hardline supporters of the government react to an incident.
