Kalameh: The medical condition of Mousavi and Rahnavard is in a concerning suspension

The Kalameh website, close to Mir Hossein Mousavi, the candidate who contested the results of the 2009 presidential election, reported that Mr. Mousavi's medical file has been "completely" taken out of the hands of the family's trusted doctor. This website emphasized in a report on Sunday, April 23, that Mr. Mousavi's "heart problems" remain "ongoing and concerning for the family." The report noted that Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard met with their children for an hour and a half on the first day of the new year, stressing that the follow-up on their health and treatment status is in a "concerning suspension." According to Kalameh, doctors have "seriously" recommended that Mr. Mousavi undergo a complete examination every two months due to "gastrointestinal problems." The website pointed out that it is necessary for the results of Zahra Rahnavard's tests to be made available to her and her treating physician, adding that "this has not yet been done." Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard, Mr. Mousavi's wife, along with Mehdi Karroubi, another candidate who contested the results of the 2009 presidential election, have been under house arrest since February 2011 without trial. Mehdi Karroubi was moved from three years of "detention" in a "safe house" of the Ministry of Intelligence to his home in Jamaran in February 2014 and is currently under house arrest at his residence. The families of these three individuals have repeatedly expressed concern over their physical condition in recent years. For instance, Narges Mousavi, the youngest daughter of Zahra Rahnavard and Mir Hossein Mousavi, reported on Wednesday, May 21, 2014, serious concerns regarding her mother's health, attributing this situation to the "strictness and negligence" that has occurred with her mother over the past three years. Mir Hossein Mousavi was transferred to the hospital on May 14, 2014, due to heart failure and again on September 20 of the same year for eye surgery. Zahra Rahnavard also underwent eye surgery at Noor Hospital in Tehran on Friday morning, October 10, 2014. Kalameh's report on Sunday also stated that "there has been no change" in the status of Mir Hossein Mousavi, Zahra Rahnavard, and Mehdi Karroubi, and their New Year visits with family have continued in a "security-controlled and limited atmosphere." "Not a single official" from Rouhani's government has visited the place of their house arrest. Kalameh emphasized in its report on Sunday: "As the second year of Rouhani's government comes to an end, not only has the promise to lift the house arrest not been fulfilled, but not a single government official has visited Akhtar Prison to see the conditions of their house arrest and the legal and humanitarian issues firsthand." Previously, Hossein Karroubi, Mehdi Karroubi's eldest son, criticized the Iranian president's policies regarding the house arrest of the Green Movement leaders on April 5, stating that Hassan Rouhani is "indifferent" to the imprisoned individuals. During the 2013 presidential election campaign, Hassan Rouhani stated that the next government could create a "non-security atmosphere" to free those under house arrest and those imprisoned due to protests against the 2009 presidential election results. On December 7, 2014, the Iranian president also responded to student chants at the Student Day ceremony for lifting the house arrest of the protest leaders, saying, "Our path and our course is the same as we promised you from the very beginning. Our covenant with you is unbreakable." Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, the spokesperson for Hassan Rouhani's government, had previously announced that Rouhani's cabinet is pursuing the lifting of house arrest for Mr. Mousavi and Karroubi in silence. However, Fatemeh Karroubi, Mehdi Karroubi's wife, stated, "Apparently, house arrest and illegal detentions are not a priority for government friends." Nevertheless, Saham News, a website close to Mehdi Karroubi, reported on Saturday, January 31, 2015, that at Hassan Rouhani's directive, the issue of lifting the house arrest of Mr. Mousavi, Mr. Karroubi, and Mrs. Rahnavard would be on the agenda of the next Supreme National Security Council meeting. This report was later denied by Keyvan Khosravi, the spokesperson for the Supreme National Security Council. According to Kalameh, during their meeting with their children, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard also expressed hope that "the overall trends will ultimately lead to the welfare, security, pride, and dignity of our country and the peace and comfort of the people." Previously, Hossein Karroubi, Mehdi Karroubi's eldest son, had also stated that his father is pleased with the path the Rouhani government has taken in nuclear negotiations with the 1+5 group.
