Kamala Harris and Donald Trump Condemn Pro-Hamas Demonstrations

Two leading candidates for the U.S. presidency, current Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, condemned a demonstration held the day before in support of the terrorist group Hamas and against Israel, which took place near the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. This demonstration occurred while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended his country's war against the Iranian-backed Palestinian group Hamas in a speech to American lawmakers in Congress. Kamala Harris, a potential Democratic candidate for the 2024 presidential election, issued a statement calling the demonstrators unpatriotic. She stated, "We witnessed the hateful actions of unpatriotic protesters and the dangerous rhetoric stemming from hatred" at the Union Station in Washington, D.C., near the Capitol. In the square in front of the train station, demonstrators replaced American flags with Palestinian flags, and a man climbed into the middle of a fountain and used red spray paint to write in large letters: "Hamas is coming." Protesters also burned a statue of Netanyahu and the U.S. flag. Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth, stating: "If those who rioted in Washington yesterday were Republican/conservative, they would all be in jail right now facing 10 to 20-year sentences. Under this fraudulent government, nothing happens to them!" Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Washington on Wednesday to protest Netanyahu's presence in Congress and in support of Palestinians. Most of the protests were peaceful, but some demonstrators clashed with police, resulting in 23 arrests. The Vice President of the United States stated: "I condemn anyone who behaves friendly with the wild terrorist organization Hamas, which is committed to the destruction of Israel and the killing of Jews. The graffiti and slogans in support of Hamas are disgusting, and we should not tolerate them in our country." Kamala Harris also condemned the burning of the U.S. flag, saying: "This flag symbolizes our highest ideals as a nation and represents America's promise. It should never be desecrated in this way." Although a U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1989 states that burning the American flag is a legal form of free speech. Some Republican members of the House of Representatives visited Union Station late Wednesday and replaced three U.S. flags for the Palestinian flags that anti-Israel protesters had previously installed after burning the American flags. In his speech on Wednesday among American lawmakers, the Israeli Prime Minister referred to the protesters outside the Capitol and said he had a message for them. Benjamin Netanyahu used a Cold War-era term regarding people who were exploited for political purposes, saying: "When the tyrants of Tehran, who hang homosexuals from cranes and kill women for not covering their hair, praise you, promote you, and financially support you, you have officially become Iran's useful idiots." On Tuesday, a group of Jewish citizens in Washington, D.C., protested against the sale of American weapons to Israel. No reports of major unrest were published from that demonstration. Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House, had initially invited the Israeli Prime Minister to speak about the situation in Gaza. Then three other senior congressional officials, including two Democrats, joined him and asked Netanyahu to update lawmakers on the war situation. It was previously reported that several Democratic members of Congress planned to boycott Netanyahu's speech in protest of Israel's actions during the Gaza war. The ongoing war in Gaza began after Hamas's terrorist attack on southern Israel on October 7. Hamas is supported militarily and financially by the Islamic Republic.
