Kamala Harris at Ford Union Members in Detroit: We Stand for Justice and Equality

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who would be her running mate if she wins the presidential election, showed their support for organized workers on Thursday at a labor union hall in the Detroit area. According to the Associated Press, Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate, and Walz spoke with about 100 members of the United Auto Workers union, which represents Ford workers in Michigan. Their stop in Detroit came shortly after a press conference held by Republican candidate Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida. Harris described the value of labor unions, stating that they convey the idea that 'no one should have to fight alone' and 'hard work is good work.' She said, 'We enjoy doing hard work because we know what we value.' Harris added, 'When you know what you value, you know what you need to fight for. We know what we value and we support people, the dignity of work, and freedom. We stand for justice, we stand for equality.' She continued, 'And so we will fight for all of this.' Walz echoed a favorite saying of President Joe Biden, telling the workers, 'We know that unions created the middle class.' The United Auto Workers members were the first Ford workers to strike in 2003 when a union contract with Ford ended. These factory workers went on strike in mid-September last year and remained in protest until late October when the union announced a tentative agreement with Ford.
