Kazem Gharibabadi Appointed as Iran's New Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency

On Wednesday, June 30, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that Kazem Gharibabadi has been appointed as the permanent representative of the Islamic Republic to international organizations in Vienna. According to Fars News Agency, Mr. Gharibabadi, who has held the position of Deputy for International Affairs at the Iranian Judiciary's Human Rights Headquarters, has been appointed to this position on the recommendation of Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran's Foreign Minister, and with the approval of Hassan Rouhani, replacing Reza Najafi. The Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) also quoted the spokesperson for the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran stating that Mr. Gharibabadi will soon travel to Vienna and begin his new role. Kazem Gharibabadi was part of the negotiating team of the Islamic Republic during the first term of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad when Ali Larijani, the then head of Iran's National Security Council, was in charge of nuclear negotiations with the West. One of the most important international organizations in Vienna is the International Atomic Energy Agency, which oversees Tehran's nuclear activities. This organization has so far confirmed Iran's compliance with its nuclear agreement with world powers, although the fate of this agreement is now fraught with uncertainties following the U.S. withdrawal from the deal and the imminent return of sanctions against Tehran. The U.S. has set 12 conditions for reaching a new nuclear agreement with Iran, including halting uranium enrichment, closing heavy water facilities, stopping ballistic missile development, and ceasing support for Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group. However, Iran has refused to accept these conditions, emphasizing that it is not willing to accept both sanctions and the limitations imposed by the JCPOA. Kazem Gharibabadi has previously represented Iran at the International Atomic Energy Agency and has also served as Iran's ambassador to the Netherlands.
