Khatami: Iran Will Continue Its Peaceful Nuclear Programs - 2002-12-24

Mohammad Khatami, the President of Iran, emphasized the peaceful use of nuclear technology by Iran. During his three-day visit to Pakistan, he stated that his country intends to complete the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Khatami mentioned that Iran is committed to its various agreements and does not plan to keep the uranium waste produced in the power plant in Iran, as enriched uranium waste would lead to environmental issues. The Iranian President stated that given the capabilities available in Iran, the country will have a nuclear power plant and will expand the peaceful use of nuclear energy. This comes at a time when Iran is facing severe criticism from the United States regarding its nuclear activities. Khatami also stated that the U.S. should pressure Israel to disclose its nuclear energy program, which he described as a threat to international peace and security. Today, Khatami met with Zafarullah Jamali, the new Prime Minister of Pakistan, and yesterday he had discussions with Pervez Musharraf, the President of that country. Khatami noted that Iran, which has good relations with India and Pakistan, will play an important role in reducing tensions between the two nuclear rivals over the Kashmir issue.
