Kim Jong Un Crosses the Border Between North and South Korea on Foot

On Friday, coinciding with the start of negotiations regarding the cessation of North Korea's nuclear activities, Kim Jong Un will become the first leader of North Korea to step onto South Korean soil since the division of the Korean Peninsula nearly seven decades ago. According to a Bloomberg report, Kim Jong Un will cross the border between the two countries at the village of Panmunjom at 9:30 AM local time before meeting with the South Korean leader. Analysts say this meeting, which is the third between the leaders of the two countries since the Korean War and the first since 2007, will have a significant impact on North Korean leader's negotiations with Donald Trump. Bloomberg writes that the North Korean regime is nearing the capability to produce missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads that could target U.S. cities, with estimates suggesting the country possesses 60 nuclear bombs. On the other hand, the Trump administration has intensified economic sanctions against North Korea and warned that if the country continues to threaten the U.S., military action will be taken against it. The Chief of Staff of the South Korean presidency and the person responsible for preparing the summit between the two Koreas told reporters on Thursday, 'This summit will focus solely on halting nuclear activities and policies related to achieving lasting peace.' He added that it is difficult to predict exactly what agreement will result from this meeting. Reports released before the summit suggest that the two leaders may sign a peace statement to replace the 1953 armistice agreement. Since the two countries have not yet signed a peace agreement, they are technically still at war. Additionally, there may be agreements on the gradual withdrawal of forces from the border area and strategies for continuing negotiations, nuclear inspections, and lifting sanctions. None of the previous negotiations regarding nuclear inspections and lifting sanctions between the two countries have yielded results. The presidents of the two countries are expected to appear in front of cameras on various occasions, including a handshake, signing a guestbook, and planting a tree. The two leaders are also expected to sign agreements before a dinner and may even participate in a joint press conference. North Korea recently announced that it will shut down its nuclear testing facilities and halt nuclear and ballistic missile tests. Donald Trump called these actions a 'major breakthrough' and even stated that the North Korean leader has shown respectful behavior. However, the U.S. President has not let his guard down, stating that North Korea has not kept its promises in the past and that if negotiations are not fruitful or if North Korea does not act in good faith, 'he will leave the negotiating table.' The Trump administration has intensified sanctions against North Korea, and analysts believe this has significantly influenced the North Korean leadership to come to the negotiating table.
