Knife Attack at Michigan Airport Under Investigation as Terrorist Act

U.S. federal police are investigating a knife attack at Michigan airport as a 'terrorist act.' The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 21, when the attacker shouted 'Allahu Akbar' and attacked a security officer, injuring him before being apprehended. The knife attack at Bishop International Airport in Flint halted normal airport operations until 5 PM. U.S. officials say the arrested individual is named 'Aamer Fattouhi,' 49 years old, and from Quebec, Canada. David Glawe, an FBI official, told reporters, 'We are investigating the incident as a terrorist act.' According to reports, Fattouhi, who legally entered the U.S. through the Champlain Lake border in New York, roamed the public areas of the airport, went to the second floor where the airport's restaurants and bars are located, then pulled out a 30-centimeter knife and injured a security officer in the neck while shouting 'Allahu Akbar.' The injured officer, who is not in critical condition, managed to subdue the attacker before other officers arrived. In a statement issued by the Michigan prosecutor's office, the attacker stated during the incident that he intended to 'avenge the victims of Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan.' Police officials say Fattouhi is cooperating with them and during initial confessions in custody, he spoke about his reasons for the attack and his 'hatred' for America. Because the suspect is a Canadian citizen, the police of that country are also involved in the investigation, and security forces have searched his home in Montreal. Two others have also been arrested in connection with the incident. No passengers or citizens present at the scene were harmed during the attack. The Michigan airport incident occurred just one day after soldiers in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, neutralized an individual who attempted to carry out a suicide attack at a train station. A few days prior, an attacker in a vehicle ran over several worshippers outside a mosque in London. Earlier in mid-June, three attackers on London Bridge ran over several people and attacked others with knives, and earlier this month, a suicide bomber in Manchester killed 22 people. The deadly attacks in Tehran, for which ISIS claimed responsibility, also occurred in June.
