Knife Attack at School in China Leaves 8 Dead

In a knife attack at a vocational school in eastern China, eight people were killed and 17 others were injured. The attack occurred on Saturday evening, November 26, at the Wuxi Institute of Arts and Vocational Technology in Yixing City, Jiangsu Province. Police say they have arrested the suspect, a former student. The police in Yixing stated that the suspect is a 21-year-old former student of the institute who was supposed to graduate this year but failed his exams. According to the police, the suspect confessed that he 'returned to school to express his anger and commit these murders.' China has strict regulations on carrying firearms, but knife crimes are not uncommon in the country. Generally, violent crimes in China are rare compared to many Western countries, but the Asian nation has witnessed a series of deadly attacks in recent months. Last week, a man drove a vehicle into a crowd of citizens exercising in Zhuhai, southern China, resulting in at least 35 deaths and over 40 injuries. Chinese authorities reported that the 62-year-old man was arrested by local police but is in critical condition after injuring himself with a knife and has not yet been interrogated. Shortly thereafter, police announced that initial investigations indicate that his attack was due to 'dissatisfaction with the division of property after a divorce.' A month earlier, in Shanghai, a man with a knife attacked people in a supermarket, killing three and injuring 15 others. Two months ago, a Japanese student was stabbed to death in the southern city of Shenzhen, which borders Hong Kong.
