Knife Attack at Supermarket in Hamburg Leaves One Dead and Six Injured

German police report that a knife attack occurred on Friday afternoon at a supermarket in Hamburg, resulting in one death and six injuries. The assailant is in police custody, but no information regarding the motive for the attack has been released yet. According to German police, the attacker is a 26-year-old born in the United Arab Emirates, but it is still unclear what country’s nationality he holds. The police statement also indicates that the deceased is a 50-year-old German man, and among the injured are a 50-year-old woman and four men aged between 19 and 64. A 35-year-old man was severely injured while attempting to stop the attacker. The police did not mention the motive behind the attack, but earlier reports from German news agencies labeled the assailant as a 'suspect of robbery' who randomly attacked attendees, resulting in one death. Various cities in Germany have witnessed cold weapon attacks over the past year, with some of these incidents claimed by the Islamic State group. For instance, in July 2016, an attacker identified as an Afghan refugee injured five people with an axe and knife on a train, and ISIS later called him a 'soldier' of theirs. In August of last year, a similar attack in Reutlingen, Germany, involved a Syrian refugee who killed a woman and injured two others with a machete, although police stated at the time that they found no links to terrorist groups. Earlier, in May 2016, a 27-year-old man attacked pedestrians with a knife in eastern Munich, killing one and injuring three others. After the arrest of this attacker, police reported that he suffered from mental health issues and addiction. In a similar incident last December, a 36-year-old man injured seven people with an axe at a Düsseldorf train station, with police again citing the attacker's 'mental health issues.'
