Kyiv Accuses Russia of Shooting Unarmed Ukrainian Soldiers

Following the release of a video on social media showing several Russian soldiers shooting at two surrendered Ukrainian soldiers, Kyiv officials on Sunday, December 3, accused Russia of committing a war crime. According to Reuters, the unverified video shows a soldier emerging from a battlefield with his hands raised and then lying down on the ground. A second soldier stumbles out and also lies down. It then appears that Russian forces opened fire, and the video ends. The Ukrainian Attorney General's office stated, "This video shows a group of individuals in Russian uniforms shooting at two unarmed soldiers dressed in Ukrainian armed forces uniforms who were surrendering." It added that this incident occurred in the Pokrovsk area, a vast region of Donetsk near Avdiivka, which has seen some of the most intense fighting in recent weeks. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's special human rights inspector, deemed the execution of the surrendering soldiers a war crime in response to the video. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet commented on this matter. Previously, in April, a Ukrainian sniper was shot after shouting "Glory to Ukraine" or "Slava Ukraini." Russia denies committing war crimes during its 21-month war in Ukraine, while Kyiv claims that Russia regularly violates the laws of war. Ukrainian forces have been countering heavy Russian attacks in recent months as Moscow attempts to reclaim areas lost during Ukraine's counteroffensive a year ago.
