Kyiv Investigates 'Execution of a Soldier' by 'Sword'

Ukrainian prosecutors announced on Tuesday, September 17, that they have launched an investigation into the execution of a Ukrainian soldier who was killed by a sword. In the latest criminal investigations initiated during Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Attorney General's office stated on Telegram that it is examining a social media post that apparently shows images related to the execution of a soldier from the country. Andriy Kostin, the Attorney General of Ukraine, wrote on X: 'A video of the alleged execution of an unarmed Ukrainian soldier with his hands tied is circulating on the internet. This soldier was killed with a sword. This crime took place in Novorudivka, Donetsk region.' According to Reuters, a blurry image accompanying the Attorney General's post and statement showed a bloody body in military clothing with a sword embedded in it and tape visible around one hand. Reuters has not independently verified this image. Kyiv claims that Moscow has documented nearly 130,000 war crimes committed by Russia since the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in March 2022. Moscow has not commented on these allegations; however, the Kremlin has consistently denied the commission of war crimes by Russia in Ukraine. Kostin recently stated that he is investigating the execution of 73 Ukrainian prisoners.
