Kyiv Reports Russian Drone Attacks on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure

Ukrainian officials announced on Wednesday, April 11, that Russia targeted the country's energy and transportation infrastructure with 17 drones, two cruise missiles, and one ballistic missile. In this regard, the Ukrainian Air Force reported that it intercepted and destroyed 14 drones over the Mykolaiv and Odesa regions. Additionally, Ukraine's air defense shot down two out of three missiles aimed at Odesa. Nevertheless, Oleg Kiper, the regional governor of Odesa, stated on Telegram that the focus of the attacks was on energy and transportation infrastructure, which caused damage to several sites and left at least two injured. The governor of Mykolaiv also reported on Telegram that the drone attack damaged energy infrastructure in the region and caused a power outage, which was resolved after a few hours. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced that it had thwarted a Ukrainian drone attack that occurred in the past 24 hours, destroying five drones over the Bryansk region. Earlier, Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated that he had asked Donald Trump, a potential Republican candidate in the upcoming U.S. presidential election, to visit Ukraine. He said he wanted to learn about Mr. Trump's proposals for ending the war between Ukraine and Russia. However, Mr. Zelensky emphasized that he is not interested in Mr. Trump's idea that the war would end if Ukraine ceded large amounts of its territory. On Tuesday, April 10, the U.S. military announced that it had transferred large quantities of weapons and munitions seized from the Revolutionary Guard en route to Yemen to the Ukrainian armed forces. These weapons include over 5,000 Kalashnikov rifles, machine guns, sniper rifles, RPG-7s, and more than 500,000 7.62mm rounds, which the U.S. claims will help Ukraine defend against the Russian invasion. Ukraine is facing a shortage of weapons, partly due to opposition from a group of Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives to further assistance to the country. Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukrainian forces would be defeated in their fight against Russia without additional military aid from the U.S. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, and has occupied parts of the country. Meanwhile, David Cameron, the British Foreign Secretary, visited the U.S. to encourage lawmakers to pass a bill for additional aid to Ukraine, meeting with his counterpart Antony Blinken and several leaders of the U.S. Congress. Joe Biden, the U.S. President, has repeatedly urged opposing Republicans to support the aid bill for Ukraine. Some Republicans in the House of Representatives argue that the focus should be on domestic priorities such as securing the U.S.-Mexico border against a wave of migrants. David Cameron stated in a statement that 'the success of Ukraine and the defeat of Putin are vital for the security of America and Europe,' adding, 'The alternative encourages Putin in his attempts to rewrite Europe's borders through force, and this message will clearly resonate in Beijing, Tehran, and Pyongyang.'
